August 29, 2010 - Approximately 60 interested stakeholders from Lake Nakamun and beyond gathered at Camp Nakamun for a presentation and discussion on the University of Alberta’s Iron Remediation Study which has been underway over the past couple of years.

Diane Orihel and Lindsey Wilson from the University of Alberta presented their preliminary observations on their respective studies on the effectiveness of iron treatment as a means to improve water quality, and on how this treatment may affect the lake ecosystem.

Many of you may recall seeing the 15 floating "mesocosms" which were in Lake Nakamun over last summer and this past winter; these enclosures enabled Diane and Lindsey to test the effectiveness of different concentrations of iron and associated effects on algae and invertebrates, in an isolated column of water thereby simulating actual conditions in the lake.

While sample and data analyses are still underway and the final reports of these studies are still about a year away, the initial observations are promising insofar as minimizing the release of phosphorous from the lake sediments which leads to the development of the blue-green algae and poor water quality that we have observed over the past number of years.

Further studies are underway in 24 farm dugouts in Alberta this year to test the effectivenss of iron remediation in a "full scale" environment and the results will compliment the studies already undertaken.

Diane and Lindsey pointed out that while this treatment may prove to be an effective means of contolling the internal release of phosphorous from the lake, we must continue to be good stewards of our watershed and lake by continuing to employ best practice that will minimize or eliminate external nutrient loadings via fertilizers and other runoff pollutants.

Will this treatment lead to a full-scale treatment in Lake Nakamun or some other Central Alberta lake some day? The answer to this is "maybe" ; the cost of this will be extensive and considerable collaboration and work amoung the stakeholders in the watershed and regulatory agencies will be required to persue this notion.

The Lac La Nonne Watershed Stewardship Society has been fully engaged in this study and will continue to facilitate further discussions, collaborations, and explore future steps in this regard noting that public leadership will be required to lead further initiatives and actions.

Final reports on the University of Alberta’s Iron Remediation Study in Nakamun Lake will be publicly available in 2011. For further information on this study, please contact Diane Orihel (orihel@ualberta.ca).
